Arms has a bit of Stephen Merritt to them (actually “him,” as Arms is just Todd, although you could never tell from the album’s production), but with more verve at times. Unlike the Magnetic Fields and similar acts, Arms is not all-irony, all the time; there’s real feeling here, authentic joy to go with the angst. And there are intricate stories, sometimes strange and indecipherable but always interesting. Arms’ first full-length comes out June 30th.
