Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings

posted by Lauren on September 14, 2008

I personally have a love for the early 60’s doo-wop, and when I first heard Sharon Jones, I thought for sure this was a lost album from The Supremes, Aretha Franklin or some other strong soul goddess of Motown. But no! This is indie artist Sharon Jones and her band, the Dap-Kings. They are fab.u.lous! I promise, you will be looking for your beehive wig, snapping on your acrylic nails, and singing into your comb to these catchy and soulful songs quicker than you can spell R-E-S-P-E-C-T. The song, “Tell Me” is such a throw back that is impossible to ignore her dop wop influences, and impossible not to sway and dance like a backup singer at a microphone on a background stage. “Tell me you love me!”

I look forward to her ACL performance, as I have heard that she is the hardest working woman in the music industry. I look forward to seeing her work her magic, and watching people discover the past by Sharon’s reinvention of it in the present. She is expected to put on a great show. She plays Saturday at 2:30 on the AMD stage, and you know I’ll be at the front! Enjoy!
