The Silent Years

The Silent Years are the new Paul Simon. Granted, there’s a numerical mismatch there, as the first is plural and Paul Simon rolled solo. But the melodic impulse is similar, and singer Josh Epstein’s voice, range and rhythm echo everything from Mrs. Robinson to Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes. A cynic might say the band is simply following the well-worn path of Jack Johnson (himself a shadow of the great Matthew Sweet), but The Silent Years have something more interesting going on. Is it indie? Or even pop? Hard to say, but it’s grown on me, labels aside. Give the band a listen and a chance. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
