Mercury Rev

I haven’t heard Mercury Rev’s latest album, but if it’s anything like the show I saw the other night (which was a show like most never see), it will easily make my Top Ten list for 2008.
The experience of a Mercury Rev show is like waking up in some crazy mad genius’s mind in the middle of the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey. A pure wall of sound envelopes you for over an hour, with guitars amplifying and crescendoing, awakening every one of your senses. Your body just moves with the music, feeding off the energy from the guitars. Meanwhile, Jonathan Donahue, lead singer/guitarist, takes you on a journey with him as he conducts his way through a personal symphony. Someone best described it as “controlled chaos.” Their music is simply beautiful.
With a catchy beat and throbbing guitars, the last song of the show, “Senses on Fire,” left me feeling completely alive. Has the band captured that effect in the studio? Listen to these tracks and decide for yourself.
