The Cape May

“Copper Tied” comes from Calgary-based The Cape May’s sophomore effort Glass Mountain Records. This is confusing because that’s the album name and not their label. Also confusing because the band is from Canada and not Cape May, New Jersey, where I spent many a summer of my youth, strolling the boardwalk, eating saltwater taffy and taking in the beautiful Victorian homes. That Cape May is delightful and idyllic. The band is beautiful in its own way, but not in any way reminiscent of pastel-colored homes or candy. They are more reminiscent of when, in ninth grade, my friend cut off all her hair because she listened to The Smiths for too long. She got all gloomy and I could see “Copper Tied,” in heavy rotation, having the same effect. The record has been described by MOTE Magazine as the ‘perfect soundtrack for a sulk’ but I say it depends on your mood. Yesterday its heavy bassline, smoothly-sung harsh lyrics and interesting changes had me (figuratively) in a car driving on a creekside road past trees made bright green by a soft rain on a Sunday; listening again today I was all What does it all mean? So, listen with caution, but I think that’s a sterling quality of the song. It’s spare and transformative, taking you from here to there without your express consent, with changes like turn signals or different trains of thought. Enjoy. If you feel like it. Either way, they’re good company.
