All Girl Summer Fun Band’s ‘You’re Not the One for Me’ conjures 70′s roller skates with pom-pom socks on suburban sidewalks. Through an 8 millimeter lens. The song has a sort of retro, just-like-it-never-was-quality. It’s poppy fun, twee-with-an-edge; three chords accompanied by three harmonizing girls. On K Records, these more-Portland-than-Portland ladies make handbags, design tee-shirts, and teach at a rock camp for girls. (Even volunteering is cool in Portland.) But who can think about social responsibility when you’re tapping your toes and trying to harmonize and then stop trying to harmonize immediately because you never really learned how to sing in harmony or how to sing at all? Best to just get up and dance like a Peanuts character. Or nod along and dream of warm evenings and ice cold colas. Or how to better your community. Because, really, if you’re not part of the solution, you’re lazy.

Bears make indie pop in its purest form. Although really, many of the band’s tracks sound less “indie” and more like that gentle period between the late 50′s and mid-60′s, when the Beatles still crooned sweetly, before the wonderful weirdness of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Bears’ music isn’t all sugar and spice though. Several tracks embed dark themes of bitterness and loss in otherwise saccharine melodies, a mixture that will keep you guessing as you nod along.

With countless blogs and tens of millions of music lovers scouring the interweb for new tunes every day, it’s unusual to discover a great band before the rest of the world does. But this is one of those lucky days. The Lazy Darlings have only one four-song EP to their names, which means you can listen to their entire catalog while the coffee brews. And you’ll want to hear it all, probably more than once, because “Life is Easy” is a truly terrific album. The title track features Daves James doing his best Dylan impression, if Dylan sang alt-country duets. “Laura” has a harder-edge but the same West Texas twang. The band’s Myspace page doesn’t mention a follow-up album, but hopefully it’s in the works. Until then, buy the the other half of the album and enjoy.

I seem to be sucker for bands that have been around the block a time or two. I get excited about how much I like a group and start talking them up, only to get blank stares in response. “Who?” The 88, I reply. This L.A. trio has been trying to attract attention for years via television, radio, and even on the big screen. With Keith Slettedahl’s vocals and Anthony Zimmitti’s drums, you might compare them to Sunny Day Real Estate. For me, though, Keith sounds more like Robbie Williams. The music is fun to listen to and the piano adds that certain something that separates The 88 from other Indie bands. For a band that works so hard, they deserve all the praise I can give them. The 88′s latest album is “Not only…But also.” Give it a spin.
