Autolux

I’ve been waiting forever for Autolux to come to town, but the band is an enigma. They have two web sites, neither of which is fully functional. And they’ve released one track in the last three years (see below). Which you can’t download or buy anywhere on the ‘net. Suffice it to say, self-promotion isn’t the band’s top priority. Maybe it should be, though, because Autolux is an exceptional band. It all starts with the guitars, which remind me of Sonic Youth. Then there are the vocals, which sound like . . . well, no one else, actually. The band speaks softly but rocks nonetheless. When you can do that, there’s no need to shout. And all three members (Carla Azar, Eugene Goreshter and Greg Edwards) can really sing. Azar is also a terrific drummer. She drives much of the band’s sound, in fact, as evident on the excellent “Audience No. 2,” the “new” (circa April 2008) Autolux track.

Autolux tours sporadically, but claims to have a show at Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, New York. That’s an actual country club, with golf and all, and the event is the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival. So if you happen to be in upstate New York on September 12, 2009, be sure to catch the Autolux set. And if not, well … they’re bound to play at least one date in 2010. Good luck finding them until then.
