“Disclaimer,” the first track off of The Dears’ 2008 album Missiles, should come with just that. For over 6 minutes of pure pop fun, your ears will schizophrenically dart from one explosive sound to the next. Your mind will be so confused by the lyrics that are so expertly laid on a cushion of baroque pop that you think that “I wanna pummel some heads just because” is a phrase of endearment.
“Disclaimer” uses its length to its fullest potential. The intro is two happy minutes of jazzy electropop; the next two minutes vocalist Murray Lightburn smoothly croons pointedly simple verse over a more rock-driven beat; for the final two minutes “Come Back” is compulsively repeated over and over again amidst pure waves of sound, which make you feel like you’re swimming through the ocean of an obsessive mind.
Everything about “Disclaimer” makes it one of The Dears’ most experimental songs yet. Disclaimer or not, it works.
