Parts and Labor are an enigma wrapped in a puzzle, stuffed with bacon. OK, so maybe not the last part. But there’s something equally incongruous about the band. On the one hand, they can make great straight-ahead pop. See “Nowheres Nigh.” But that’s about as accessible as the band gets, and probably a lot more radio-friendly than they want to be. Much of the rest of the band’s work involves some combination of feedback and squealing guitars, with Polyphonic Spree-like choral verses in the background. Way back. At the extremes, these songs are unlistenable. There’s a sweet spot though, where all the batshit craziness comes together just right, as on the drum-n-bass inspired (really) ‘Fractured Skies.’ How’s that work, you ask? Take two minutes and listen for yourself. You’ll either love it or hate it, I promise.
