Oviedo is a charming northern Spanish town that holds a special place in the heart of anyone who’s been there. I would have been disappointed had this track, off the debut Blind Pilot album 3 Rounds and a Sound, not lived up to the high expectations set by its name. As seen in the film Vicky Christina Barcelona, Oviedo can be a bastion of escapism, far enough from the major cities for you to feel remote enough from the world and what ails you, at least for a little while.
The song, luckily, is delightfully folky, and thoughtfully arranged. What stands out most though is the poetry of the lyrics written by Israel Nebeker, one half of the Blind Pilot duo. (Of course, let’s not forget the other half, the equally talented Ryan Dobrowski, who’s responsible for the punctuated drumming). The lyrics invoke strong images of walking through the quaint city, awaiting the sidra that pours into your glass from far over the bartender’s head and losing yourself in the novelty of the experience. The words also evoke the sensation of getting so physically far away from the source of your problems, but eventually appreciating what you were escaping from the start. As Oviedo, or the newness of any experience wears off, all that you are left with is you. I may not make it back to Oviedo anytime soon, but I will make it to Mercury Lounge in NYC on March 31st to check out the live show.

Great imagery in the lyrics. And this is surprisingly catchy given how simple it is.
