Jason Collett

Jason Collett’s ‘Out of Time’ starts out casually bluesy, making you feel like you actually have all the time in the world. It’s an invitation, in fact–from a mouth with a dangling cigarette on a face tipped downward, obscured by a fedora–to just slow down for a second, reconsider what’s the rush after all and how long could it take, really, to stop for a beer? I mean, it’s just one beer. But then the song speeds up a bit and you don’t feel rushed to finish your pint (because you stopped for one) but, instead, the momentum of the music is met with the woo-woo-ey vocals and you sigh and think of Pavement’s catchiest record ever, Wowee Zowee, which was so catchy it was almost improper and you don’t know what that means exactly but this guy, Jason Collett, of Broken Social Scene fame, kinda nails it in the exact same way. That’s not to say ‘Out of Time’ sounds dated–it’s fresh and interesting and now and here on his most recent record, Here’s to Being Here. Cheers.
‘I’ll Bring the Sun,’ from 2005 release, Idols of Exile, is more straightforward, but equally satisfying.
