Black Lips

I remember last year when Magnetic Fields Distortion came out I said that it sounded like Psychocandy infused with more 50s “melody.” Now that 200 Million thousand by the Black Lips is out, I accuse them of sounding like the 50s played through a stereo, in a very cool car, driven underwater. This is a much more mature, blues infused, and powerful Black Lips. In particular, despite child like words on the inner sleeving, this album swaggers with murky, powerful, guitar driven, hip coiling, truth. In particular the song Big Black Jesus of Today gives truth to the “TRUTH” Black Lips say saves them from giving in to meaninglessness. It is impossible to listen to this track and not feel the intense, dirty, almost unconscious transmissions of grimy, lust-filled, grinding blues. Elijah is a bit more of a typical alt rock mover….but there is a nasty hook and it will pull you deep. Don’t get me wrong, the Black Lips still tend toward being silly kids lyrically at times but their music is starting to make a mockery of their mockery. This is dark blues music that you can either stand sullenly near or flat-out lose your underwear to.
