Amy Millan

It’s been forever since I found a CD that I liked every single tune on. Amy Millan accomplished just that with her debut album “Honey from the Tombs.” You may recognize the name from other bands such as Stars and Broken Social Scene, as she belongs to both. This is her first solo album (the second is out any day now), and you’ll find a bit of everything in it: banjo, guitar, great lyrics and a heart-breaking, sometimes rollicking voice. Although Stars and BSS stay close to their Indie Rock labels, “Honey From the Tombs” has more of a folk/singer-songwriter vibe to it. But don’t be misled, this is not house cleaning music or something that will put you to sleep at night. It’s more likely to move and inspire you, maybe to scribble out your own tunes someday.
(It’s also worth noting that Millan is on the Arts & Crafts label, an outfit with at least half a dozen indie greats waiting to be discovered. We’ve covered a few ourselves and love each one: The Stills, The Dears and Jason Collett).

I’m pretty sure Honey From the Tombs was Amy’s first solo album, and it was released back in 2006 if I’m not mistaken. Her second solo album is still in the process of being recorded.
