Lo-Fi Lion

posted by Emily on March 19, 2009

Sometimes trolling the internet for good new music is a good way to, you know, find good new music. Sometimes you find bands that are endearingly–occasionally heartbreakingly–sincere but too rough to appreciate just yet. So you put them aside and hope. Other times, you come across musicians who’ve played a lot and then started talking to each other–as musicians tend to do–and decided it would better to play together than to play with themselves.* Such is the case with Pittsburgh’s Lo-Fi Lions. These guys started up only about a year ago and are already playing out. In fact, the first track, ‘Jesus’ is only four months old.**

So, Jesus,*** this is a good song. It sort of creeps up for a second and then the keyboard and the backing vocals kick in and it’s on. Montage of city scenes and disco balls and even a fun li’l drum solo. The far away lead vocal seems to be alternate being carried just above or below the surface of the music. Good voice, tight band. If I were in the music producing biz, I might think this tune could be a teensy bit shorter to have greater impact. But I still have my soul and some shreds of dignity, thanks, and I think the current length just gives you more time to enjoy it. So, I’ll turn the other cheek**** and love it as it is.

** Not that one.
*** That one.
****Another Jesus joke. Get it?
