Viva Voce (say it with me: “Vee-Vah-Voh-Chay”) is Italian for “word of mouth.” The band’s roots are about as far from Italy as geographically and culturally possible, however; the husband-wife duo hales from Alabama, of all places. Fast forward 11 years and the band has decamped to Portland (much more hip) and doubled in size. Viva Voce is still a two-piece at heart though, defined by hooky, wavy guitar riffs, a heavenly voice and a steady backbeat. ‘Wrecking Ball’ could be the sequel to the Breeders’ ‘Cannonball’, interweaving smooth vocals and a smoother bass line with squelching blasts of guitar. ‘Lesson No. 1′ is more downbeat but worth a listen.
Keep an eye out for Viva Voce’s new album “Rose City,” set to drop on May 26, 2009.
