Crystal Stilts is nothing like the images the name evokes. There are no tall, colorful clowns staggering around on perfectly reflective stilts. No crowd dancing below them in exaggerated ecstasy. Crystal Stilts is more like the intense existentialist conversation you have with a small group of close friends at your local bar or coffee shop. Crystal Stilts are stilts for your mind and soul.
The sound of this Brooklyn based band screams for comparisons to The Jesus and Mary Chain and Joy Division. Alight of the Night, Crystal Stilts’ first full-length album released in 2008, is packed with downbeat, hazy vocal angst. “The Dazzled” is a perfect example of the simplicity, yet depth, of their lyrics and song structures. This track consists of a simple five lines; it’s no more complicated than that, yet it’s the most complicated thing in the world.
So grab your beverage of choice, some of your more introspective friends and go discuss the meaning of life over the back-drop of Crystal Stilts. Your insights and revelations may be that much deeper.
