I keep pressing the search button (or in this day and age…the “>”) to find just the right song to put me in a good mood. I finally hit Stop and turn the volume up loud enough for the speakers to block out Life, The Universe and Everything But the music. The band is – or was – “Mazarin”. That name is at the center of a legal dispute, however, so you can find the band lurking under the label “Mazarinband.” And that’s hardly the strangest thing going on here; the music is just as unpredictable. “The New American Apathy” is Example A: just when you think you’ve got the beat figured out , the tempo changes radically, but your head keeps moving. Sonic whiplash results.
Out of Philadelphia, these guys were going strong until the legal dispute about the name ensued. But fret not, Quentin Stoltzfus (what a name!), the band’s founder and songwriter is still working on his own tracks. I can’t wait to hear what he comes out with. Until he releases something (or the courts sort the band out) you can still find Mazarin’s music on their website. But make sure you have the right Mazarin and or you’ll find yourself listening to a bar band from Long Island (where people actually continue to live) instead of the indie pop band I’ve grown to know and love.
{Editor’s note: Does ‘American Apathy’ remind anyone else of the Flaming Lips? Yoshi, you are missed}
