So an Indieball fave, Grizzly Bear, has a shiny new gem for your listening pleasure. Or, if you’re like me, slight confusion. I get that they’re good. I even get that they’re really, really good. But it’s all so intricate. Not politely so, like that nice afghan blanket at your Aunt Mabel’s house; all those pieces of yarn stitched together to create a homogeneous whole. No, sir/ma’am/person. It’s more like when you put your face into that beloved Brookstone mainstay, the thousands-of-not-sharp-pins thing. You know the one; they’re all vertically held together by an open-faced wooden case and all the heads face the same way and the other side is where you put your hand or arm or, admit it, your face. You may feel the whole thing on your face at once but what you really feel is each and every little pin ever so slightly pushing into your forehead, cheeks, chin, mouth, eyelids, nose. They’re everywhere, man, and though they’re happy to be taken lightly, they will not be ignored. Such is Two Weeks. So much instrumentation popping up here and there and here and here but still also there and over there and what’s that? Something happening way back there as well. Shees, you only have two ears, how are you to keep up? I feel you. And the more I listen, the more I feel Two Weeks. Because amidst the tickling pins there’s something sublime that takes you away ever so: the lead vocals. The vocals are the lovechild of Interpol’s Paul Banks and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, soothes and soars. And that’s enough of these mixed metaphors.
Grizzly Bear is touring and hitting big spots to showcase their latest LP, Veckatimest. It is only hours old. Welcome it to the world.
