A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get the lowdown on a terrific indie talent coming through town, playing under the name “Ghost of Summer Suns.” (It’s all about who you know when it comes to finding out about new music. Lucky you know us.) Despite the full-band name, Ghost of Summer Suns is a solo project for Elizabeth Elkins. It’s also perfect for those of us who scour the internets for the one, the only, Ultimate Female Indie Musician. Talent is one thing, and Elkins has it in spades. But you don’t often find someone so passionate about their music and so willing to stand alone on a stage putting it on display. The influences here are too many to name but, they’re all good: Concrete Blond for Elkins’ “sound,” and her voice evokes PJ Harvey, among others.
With seriously heartfelt lyrics, Elkins pulls you in and under. It’s no wonder she’s won John Lennon’s songwriting contest. For those looking for the same core but a bit more edge, check out her other band “The Swear”. You still get the lyrics but you also get a more rocking indie sound.
