Relentless7

Stop counting. There aren’t 7 members in this band. Although I suppose that based on talent, Ben Harper could count as 4 himself. (Not to say that the other band members aren’t talented . . . they are . . . but we’re talking about Ben Harper here.)

Relentless7’s recently released White Lies for Dark Times is classic rockin’ America, with the perfect blend of jazz and blues influences creating a backdrop for anthemic tunes. Dark Times could be a perfect album for a cross-country road trip, if you ask me.(Note: I’m really referring to a US road trip, full of Americana landscapes that would melt seamlessly into the music. Appropriateness on any other road trip could provide unpredictable results, but don’t be scared to give it a try. Do report back to Indieball though.)

Harper uses simpler lyrics than usual in “Boots like these,” but the progression of the song is what makes this track interesting. In a Being John Malkovich kind of way, we enter Harper’s head and actually feel him “lose his mind” amidst the rolling drums, which become a pulsing simulation of the lyrics. We twist and turn to the end, when the guitar, in a very Kravitz-like fashion, expertly punctuates the bottom line. So get in your “car” (quotes for us city-dwellers), and turn up the volume. Drive carefully.
