Kuroma
Kuroma, a project from Hank Sullivant, former MGMT touring guitarist and founder/former bassist of the Whigs, sounds distinctly like something you’ve heard before, yet with some undefined new perspective. It’s that blanket you buy as an adult because it reminds you of the childhood version someone threw out without your consent. With Kuroma, Sullivant breaks away from his previous two bands, each with their own distinct sound, to create something that is uniquely him.
The Paris EP, like the city of the same name, is a medley of influences running in different directions, running at each other, and sometimes clashing with each other. In a perfectly chaotic storm, Paris works. “Searching for a Sheep” is earnest piano, assertive guitar riffs and transient psychedelia, flowing into a ballad punctuated by stark silence. (Repeat). “Alexander Martin” is thematic, lyrically satisfying, and vaguely Lennon-guest-singing Like a Rolling Stone. Listen to the six remaining tracks on the Paris EP and you may begin to understand the vision of Kuroma.
Recently opening for MGMT at a Brooklyn show, Kuroma mesmerized the crowd with a tightly knit sound and an engaging performance. If you’re in the New York area, Kuroma has several dates scheduled in July.
