Woods

Over the river and through the Woods, to Grandmother’s house we go. Well, maybe, if your Grandmother likes the polished lo-fi psychedelic sound of Brooklyn’s Woods. Their fourth full-length album, Songs of Shame, is a foray on the senses. The band jumps from noisier, dischordant tracks to moodier, more down-tempo ballads, all the while never forgetting to include a sneak-attack 10 minute long guitar jam in the middle of the madness. Songs of Shame was released on frontman Jeremy Earl’s own Woodsist label, which has included the likes of Wavves, Vivian Girls and Crystal Stilts.
“To Clean” and “The Number” nicely portray the band’s aforementioned range. I failed miserably at finding the lyrics for “To Clean”, so I’m not quite sure of all that Earl’s airy falsetto is saying. I do, however, know that his voice sounds heavenly amidst the spiraling guitar solos, even if the song turns out to be the saddest song in the world. “The Number” is a stunningly gorgeous amalgamation of moodily beautiful guitar solos and empathic lyrics that may have you thinking about things that you haven’t thought about for a while. Think them.
Woods are touring as far and wide as Grandmother’s house as we speak. I, for one, can’t wait for them to be back in New York so I can check out a show.
