Bear Hands

posted by Chris on September 24, 2009

The first thing that popped into my head when listening to Bear Hands’ latest single ‘What A Drag’ is that these guys seem to be a mix of MGMT and Wavves. However after taking the time to listen to more of the bands material it seems they could be compared to a whole host of acts. In fact, each track I’ve heard could be from an entirely different act; it seems so far that the band are unsure of their particular musical direction. That’s a double-edged sword really, a great facet that shows the band are obviously creative and have a lot to offer but likewise a bad thing when it comes to finding a more specific sound and audience.

Bear Hands hail from NYC, a place where great bands are ten a penny right now. This may work against them when it comes to standing out, but they deserve a shot at the spotlight.

The band are currently in the studio working on their debut album and it’s any guess which direction they end up taking. Until then, check Myspace for tracks such as ‘What A Drag’, ‘Bad Blood’, ‘Golden’ and their new demo ‘Vietnam’.

Saw these guys in Chicago last night opening for the Manic Street Preachers. Absolutely awful. Sounded terrible, and refused to look up when they were playing, like the chords were written on the stage for them (when there were chords).

I guess a band who can do it in the studio can’t always perform to a big crowd, a damn shame. Hopefully they were just having an off night.
