Field Theory* is a 4-piece band from Brooklyn that describes their music as “bi-polar indie rock.” If that’s not the coolest self-description of one’s own music, I’m not sure what is. They combine pop friendliness with fuzzed out/distorted bass lines, heavy guitars, and two lead vocals that manage to harmonize rather than compete. Not exactly the typical indie-pop sound around nowadays.

On songs like “Who’s Paying Attention Anyway”, Field Theory evoke a shoegaze feel with very fuzzy, distorted guitars. Its the kind of music where you can close your eyes and it manages to transport you to another world. The soothing vocals really pull at you, until everyone comes in together during the chorus.

“Savior,” which is easily my favorite song, begins with a super catchy riff. The bass lines (Alan) are a perfect addition to the angst-ridden guitar rock. The rough-growling singer (actually their keyboardist, Andy) really injects emotion and energy into the song. By the time the band hits the chorus, you’ll be jumping up and down with them.

Field Theory seem to be popping up quite a bit in NYC, so if you’re around they’re definitely worth checking out live.

*Kurt Lewin, the Father of Social Psychology, defined Field Theory as “the proposition that human behavior is the function of both the person and the environment.” Duh.
