J. Tillman

You may know him only as a recent Fleet Foxes inductee, but J. Tillman is so much more than that. Look no further for heart-wrenchingly honest melodies and a high level of musicianship accompanied by a decidedly down-to-earth feel. ‘Earthly Bodies’ and ‘Howling Light’ come from his second record of 2009, Year in the Kingdom, in which Tillman utilizes a bunch of new instruments. Follow the dulcimer from ‘Howling Light’ through the rest of the album and you’ll come across the occasional supplemental banjo, soft mess of wind instruments, and yearning string chorus as well. Yet nothing is overpowering in any way–in fact, Year in the Kingdom is what I would call ‘just right.’
