Califone

posted by Ariana on October 26, 2009

Califone has been at it for a good ten years now. While I don’t claim to be an expert on their discography, I know that they’ve got a wide variety of sounds under their collective belt, and that everything Califone records is distinctly Califone. Their most recent release, All My Friends Are Funeral Singers, accompanies a feature-length of the same name (incidentally produced by Tim Rutili, lead singer). That’s a first for Califone. They’ve synchronized their soundtrack, full of organic beats and Rutili’s unique vocals, to play along with the movie for live shows. The movie is not quite a horror film, not quite a comedy, but nonetheless a thoroughly entertaining mash-up of comical superstitions and religious iconography. What struck me most about it was how distinctly and undoubtedly American it is. After the movie, Rutili took questions from the audience and played a few songs, creating a great lighthearted atmosphere. Worth seeing if Califone comes to your town.
