Fight The Fight! I hate writing reviews with disclaimers, but if you listened to the first song without knowing anything about the band, more than likely you’d dismiss them as the worst band you wished you had never heard. So lets back up and talk about why you might actually like the band, once you get over their childish 13-year old like lyrics.
Ape Fight is a NJ band comprised of band members from Elefant and Radio 4. Its hard to just gloss over band names like that. After hearing that, I knew they were at least talented (even if you might not sense it in this band). But here is why I do like them. They are a great, fun band and if you can handle the term ‘cock-rock’ this is exactly what they are. In the way I always found Death From Above 1979 a guys band, this is exactly how Ape Fight is. They definitely dont write songs for everyone, but as a female, I have to say I really like their music.
The opening chords on “You Think We Suck” are so incredibly catchy they just grab you. The lyrics on the other hand, are what we probably wrote when we were in highschool. With lyrics like “you think we suck, well do you really think that we give a f***”, its not a surprise that the rest of them are about as memorable as those. Its one of those bands that grows on you because musically they are really talented. And as much as youll be cringing, you will be singing along.
And if you can get past the title of “Bonghits, Handjobs and Food”, youll find a really catchy song that has almost a surf-rock sound. Its fun with the chorus sing-alongs and almost a Beach Boys feel to it with the ‘doo doo doos’ in it. Its definitely a toe-tapping little jam.
More importantly, the band doesnt tour often, but if they do make it down your way, it might be one of the most entertaining bands to see live. They play a reverse karoake where we see the lyrics, and they play the songs (highly recommended DO NOT SING ALONG) in costumes. Its fun, its very much for the boys, and if youre one of the few gals at the show – theres no telling what they might say about you. So with that “Fight The Fight!” (this is Ape Fight’s slogan – Im just spreading it along).
