The Tallest Man On Earth

posted by Ariana on April 5, 2010

When I think “tallest man,” I’m not referring to a Mongolian herdsman. Instead, I’m thinking of the remarkable acoustic folk of Kristian Matsson, a Swedish singer & songwriter who has met with a lot of success since his 2008 debut, “Shallow Grave.” The songs available here are from a forthcoming sophomore effort entitled “The Wild Hunt,” which may or not surpass the debut in awesomeness. This album is solid as a brick, making standout songs hard to identify. Thus you may enjoy my rather arbitrary selection of the title track and “King of Spain” as generally representative of the album as a whole.

Surprised that this isn’t a creation of the Western Hemisphere? I was, too. But after a few years with Matsson’s voice in my ears, I’m increasingly aware of those few degrees of separation, that delectable audial distance that makes The Tallest Man so precious to my American ears.

Newcomers beware: Matsson has a very distinctive vocal. My roommate described it as “a dying cat.” But that shouldn’t deter you.
