For my next choice….I’m taking a totally different direction. I recently had the pleasure of accompanying a friend of mine to a Calexico show here in the city. I had never heard this band before and let me just say I was blown away. I was immediately hooked the moment they started playing. Normally I tend to shy away from bands that have more than five people in them. But these boys out of Tuscan, Arizona make it work and make it work intrinsically. Each band member contributes from within themselves creating a sound that is not only pleasing to the soul, but makes it unavoidable to move with the rhythm and smile to yourself and to the room around you. Joey Burns’s voice will lock you in. It’s so serene. Is the music Spanish? Americana? Mariachi? Latin? Don’t let those labels fool you because to me…Calexico’s music is a little bit of everything. If you have the opportunity to see this band live, I suggest you take it. Don’t be that person who misses out.
