I’m the type of person that will either instantly hate or love a song. If you’re not grabbing me within the first thirty seconds or so, you’re done for. Thao with The Get Down Stay Down makes me want to jump up and dance around in my underwear, or maybe even naked. Sorry for the image. Founded in Williamsburg, Virgina, Thao Nguyen, Willis Thompson, and Adam Thompson are a mix of dangerously catchy melodies and drum patterns, irresistible vocals, witty lyrics, and sometimes a hint of horns, vibes, and strings. Released in 2010, their latest album, Know Better Learn Faster, consists of 12 brand new tracks.
“Body” has to be my favorite off of the album. Look out for the cool trumpet riff towards the end and beware: it will be stuck in your head all day. Thao will quickly mumble her way into your heart. “Know Better Learn Faster” is such a beautiful song in so many ways. The deeper meaning of the song talks of two lovers, their fights, and how they ultimately learn to coexist. To top it all off, this track includes some excellent violin playing. Sadly, they do not have any upcoming tour dates scheduled, so I will be silently praying till the day they come to LA.
