CMJ onward. As noted in our CMJ pre-coverage, Braids was a must-see. Their harmonies came alive and morphed into a life of their own at their show at Arlene’s Grocery. Cohesive and collaborative, the chemistry among the band members was palpable.
New York’s The Wellington Papers, who played the Hype Machine’s packed showcase at Backstage bar, are vaguely reminiscent of a funked out version of Franz Ferdinand. Franz had “Michael”; TWP has “Jackie”. Brooklyn’s Beauty Feast, who played Local 269, are charmingly lo-fi, and almost choir-like in their performance. Another band whose harmonies are appreciated live, Beauty Feast’s smartly written tracks invoke a bit of Kimya Dawson. Listen to “Soon We’ll Know” and “It Grows It Grows” below.
Be sure to check out CMJ Highlights 1 and our pre-coverage, if you haven’t done so already. Two more days to go.
