“These quiet hours, I don’t know how to talk; I’ll play your game, it really don’t suit me at all; Just remember when I cut you down; It happens to the better of the brightest minds.” Cryptic. So….deep? Okay, cut the bull ****. I have no idea what this song, “Brightest Minds”, means. Doesn’t mean I love it any less!
Department of Eagles always know how to pleasantly surprise me. Their 2008 album, In Ear Park, is a true work of art {see our review}. The album is a collection of childhood memories from singer Daniel Rossen (of Grizzly Bear). I recommend that every one of you reading this get the whole album. Keep in mind, the album is very odd, but contains some beautiful guitar melodies and somewhat dreamlike songs. I’m not kidding. The track “Teenagers” makes me feel like I’m in Willy Wonka’s world. Odd mix, I am aware. See who’s laughing when you agree with me.
Off the July 2010 album Archives 2003 – 2006, a collection of previously unreleased material from those very same years, “Brightest Minds,” to me, is musical genius. I love the lyrics and vocals. Very unique. The drums keep a relatively similar pattern throughout the whole song, yet remain catchy and moving to the beat. I also threw in “No One Does It Like You”, off of In Ear Park, whose video is what first turned me on to this band. So freaking cool! Check it out. Pay attention to the 50s-like back-up vocals throughout. Remember: “I laughed so hard I fell down; I cursed these lanes I walked on”…whatever that means.
