I’m not sure how many “indie” bands today can get away with rocking a Glockenspiel, but Freelance Whales is certainly one of them. I can relate, actually, as my last name includes a “spiel,” which means “to play.” Freelance Whales also hale from Queens, NY, my home borough. (The similarities end there. For example, frontman Judah Dadone’s voice sounds a bit like Ben Gibbard of “Death Cab for Cutie”. Mine does not.)
My being stuck in my ways and drawn to what I like, the banjo sets Freelance Whales apart from other indie pop acts. Add the Glockenspiel and a variety of other instruments and you might even call them Experimental. Regardless, Indie-land is where this band resides. Playing everywhere from subway platforms to traditional stages such as at this past year’s SXSW, the Whales are exactly what Indie music needs. Something different. Something to behold, something that grabs your attention. They certainly got mine.

May I just annoy with the information that “spiel”
means “game” in german, while “to play” would be “spielen”. Isn´t that amazing ?! We all should learn a new fact about different languages everyday. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Greeting from way over the pond…
