Hail December. Goodbye Casiotone for the Painfully Alone as we have known and loved Owen Ashworth for the last thirteen years, or some combination of years or fractions of years in between. If you are leaning toward the smaller fraction of chum years, I’m slightly envious that you can now go back and explore his musical catalog that reads like a well-written diary. Either way, do not despair as you tend to do. Ashworth has made it painlessly clear that he is not quitting music, so we have his new beginning to anticipate and embrace.
As the band name might suggest, Casiotone offers rollicking electronic beats escorting half-spoken half-sung morose lyrics. Ashworth writes about everyday experiences that we or someone we know has been through or thought or tried not to think. His words are honest, simple, frank . . . this organic expression contrasted and lightened by the medley of synthesized instrumentation.
Two tracks are included here in honor of the last days of Casiotone: “Natural Light”, from 2009’s Vs. Children and, in anticipation of New Year’s (although you may not want the exact same experience depicted in this song), “New Year’s Kiss”, off of 2006’s Etiquette. If you are in San Francisco, please do catch the last ever show on December 5th, in, fittingly, the city of Ashworth’s birth.
