As of late, I’ve been really into music that successfully relaxes its listeners. Chillwave, as the name entails, seems to be nourishing this sentiment just fine. As described in a recent Indieball post on Washed Out, this genre of music is characterized by synthesized beats, lingering vocals, and lo-fi tracks. These attributes seem to be there for Blackbird Blackbird, who reminds his listeners that music is not primarily sound but an instrument of nostalgia and emotion.
Mikey Sanders comprises the entirety of Blackbird Blackbird, producing these gentle sounds and lo-fi vocals that help retain the image that is Chillwave. I love that Sanders’ Myspace page labels his act as psychedelic because nothing conjures the effect of drugs, the sense of San Francisco (where Blackbird Blackbird is based), and the essence of relaxation as much as this music. If you don’t believe me, check out the tracks below, as well as the photos and album art on Myspace. Psychedelic to say the least.
