Envision overall-clad maestros plucking like hell. I first experienced the addictive “indie bluegrass” jamboree that is Trampled By Turtles live last spring, and last month’s Chicago performance did not disappoint. With a speed and energy that’s mesmerizing, their shows are a damn good time. The crowd engages in a foot-stomping sing-a-long, while the dizzyingly talented TBT’s members bend their instruments to the breaking point. While hardcore bluegrass enthusiasts have knocked them as sounding manufactured, I see Avett-esque crossover appeal. The bluegrass boys from Duluth, MN were even nice enough to sign my monstrous shoulder cast!
Trampled By Turtles’ ridiculously skillful instrumentation is paired with earnest, well-written lyrics. Off their fifth studio album Palomino, “Wait So Long” features vocalist Dave Simonett belting amid a riotous tizzy “You can never pretend that I don’t love you/I could never pretend that I’m your man/That’s exactly the way that I want it/That’s exactly the way that I am.” “Victory,” also off of Palomino, highlights the band’s heartfelt melodic qualities which have rendered me unable to keep them off repeat since first listen.
