I’ve been more than a little bit in love with Lykke Li since her 2008 debut album Youth Novels. Her breathy vocals effortlessly convey evocative lyrics, taking Swedish indiepop on a unique turn with soulful undertones and an extra-catchy tempo. Fans have hungrily snapped up any project she’s offered since Youth Novels, including “Gifted,” a collaboration with Kanye West and Santogold and “Possibility,” written for the New Moon soundtrack. The first I had ever heard of Drake (as a non-Degrassi fan) was on his remix of “Little Bit,” and Lykke Li has been known to expertly spit rhymes herself, covering Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” live.
At long last, Lykke Li will release her sophomore album, Wounded Rhymes, on March 1. The first single, “Get Some,” surfaced last fall, while the video for “I Follow Rivers” was released last week. The hip-shaking percussion and Lykke Li’s distinctive vocals lend a primal feel to both songs. My new favorite song – correction, our new favorite, “I Follow Rivers,” is both sultry and sinister and entirely danceable.
Best of all Lykke Li will be touring Europe and North America this spring, playing Chicago on my birthday! I really can’t think of a better way to celebrate than dance, dance, dancing the night away with Miss Li!
