Geographer

posted by Loren on March 13, 2011

{SXSW is what, yes, this week. Whether or not you will be in Austin, TX in a few days, the Countdown to SXSW series should hopefully get you excited about the fantastic artists who will be performing this year. And maybe convince you to come. Check the full schedule at the SXSW link above for more info.}

The evolution of music is a very comical process sometimes, as the amalgam of genres and subgenres eventually collide. The birth of electronica, ska, and various offspring has sent music in a direction that once held the rudimentary genres of rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, and classical music. Geographer is a child of this movement, a sub-pop mixed with electro beats that leave a listener bewildered at what to call, or think of it.

This San Francisco trio consists of vocalist (Michael Deni), cellist (Nathan Blanz), and drummer (Brian Ostreicher). The best part has yet to come with their music, a product of the prolific and notorious Bay Area musical realm, and it comes in the form of their vocals. Deni can be heard amidst synthesized beats and magnificent cellos. His voice is poetic, somber to the ear and inviting, welcoming to say the least.

Geographer will showcase their talents once again at SXSW this year. There is no doubt that they can create a crowd or perform an incredible show; their music does not allow for otherwise. The music bites when needed, and relaxes when it is satisfied. “Kites,” released as a 7 inch in 2009 and also off the 2010 EP Animal Shapes, and “Can’t You Wait,” from 2008’s Innocent Ghosts, introduce electronic music with drum and cello to produce a beautiful array of sound. Check out both albums now.
