Dinosaur Feathers

posted by Jessica on April 14, 2011

“Brooklyn’s only wedding band specializing in elopements,” reads Dinosaur Feathers’ Twitter bio. I think there is something to this claim. With no previous knowledge of the band, I caught the trio’s show recently; and, much like an impromptu proposal, my immediate reaction was,”What the hell is this?” Beach Boys vintage surf sounds meet Brooklyn indie pop? And wait…is that…are they singing about Vendela Vida?

The longer I have to warm up to the idea, the better the offer sounds. It’s a jubilant set of multi-layered catchy riffs, drum machine beats, and two, even three-part harmonies. Bopping around the stage in melodic merriment, Dinosaur Feathers recalls sun-soaked nostalgia of the sixties as well as tropical beats of bands like Vampire Weekend. Within hours, they have me hooked.

After forming in 2008, Dinosaur Feathers followed up a 2009 EP with their first full-length album, Fantasy Memorial, last month. Upon further listen, you’ll notice the band’s poppy optimism conceals clever lyrics and, in songs like “Teenage Whore” and “Family Waves,” less sunny subject matter. Dinosaur Feathers’ quirky multi-dimensional formula is somewhat baffling, but oh so enjoyable. Lead singer Greg Sullo enlightens us on “Know Your Own Strength” . . . “I will knock you off your feet – I’ve got imagination.” Perfect for long days of summer lounging ahead, give Dinosaur Feathers a listen, and just see if they don’t make you want to run away into the sunset.
