I walked into Anaheim’s Chain Reaction on April 21st, ready and excited to hear the beautiful, calming music of the New York based band, Laura Stevenson and The Cans. The band consists of five unique and talented individuals, with Stevenson on vocals and lead guitar, accompanied by rhythym guitar, bass, xylophone, accordion, and drums. And what is there to say about Laura Stevenson? Along with her stunning vocals, she SHREDs on guitar.
I chatted with Stevenson after the show, and I was charmed. The band’s first record, A Record, was released in 2008. When I asked Stevenson what to expect from their new album, Sit Resist, she put it perfectly: “More mature and definitely less acoustic-y.” I immediately bought the album on April 26th; it is superb and extremely quirky. They break away from their Neil Young/Elliot Smith type of sound and influence presented in A Record and utilize more instruments and faster melodies.
“Caretaker” was my favorite song that they played live. “Master of Art” is now constantly played on repeat in my car. I was eager to find out what it was about. Stevenson opened up about her relationship with her bassist and explained that the song was about the difficulty of touring and maintaining a relationship. Catchy and deep. Mad props. Buy the album pronto and catch the end of their tour on the East Coast.
