PITCHFORK MUSIC FESTIVAL: Get Ready with Yuck
Remember the 1990s? So do many artists who have lately been referencing the decade, including London-based Yuck. I can’t say that I was big into the underground indie rock scene in elementary school, but luckily Yuck riffs on its best qualities and ushers them into the present.
While Yuck’s self-titled debut was released this spring, two of the quartet’s 20 year-old members are already indie veterans having previously played with Cajun Dance Party. Yuck’s first offering is a raw and expressive balance. Rhythmic rock-out tracks like “The Wall” feature vocals that distort and guitar solos that turn screechy as if indeed tearing through a wall, while ballads like “Suicide Policeman” offer earnest lingering melodies. A nostalgic 90′s influence can be heard in the buildup of the addictive riff and almost indiscernible fuzzy vocal on “Operation” that opens into a roaring chorus: “I wanna be well designed.” Yuck allows the listener to relive the less manufactured elements of indie rock past while designing well its future.
