Bon Iver

posted by Alex on July 7, 2011

It has been a grueling, even painful waiting process for the new Bon Iver album.  2008’s For Emma, Forever Ago goes down as one of my all time favorite records.  Justin Vernon is a stunning vocalist and every lyric and melody on the album is simply beautiful.  The highly anticipated Bon Iver, Bon Iver was finally released on June 20, 2011.   There are some major differences between the two albums.

For Emma was famously recorded in complete hibernation.  If you didn’t already know, Vernon recorded the entire album by himself in a secluded cabin in Wisconsin.  Every instrument and vocal included in the album is completely Justin Vernon.  While also recorded in Wisconsin, Bon Iver is very different.  The album itself was made in a recording studio that Vernon and his brother created, a studio special to Vernon and close to his childhood home.  However, the most significant difference in this album is the addition of sounds, including saxophone and pedal-steel, contributing to his new, unique sound.  In certain songs, Bon Iver is far from the acoustic and raw first album, his sound almost resembling something taken from the 90s.

“Towers” exemplifies Vernon’s new style, yet still maintains the poetic and lyrical musicianship of the brilliant songwriter.  His tour in the US continues throughout the summer and makes its way to Europe in the Fall. Don’t miss him!  The chance to see the iconic Bon Iver would be life changing.

{Editor’s Note: Indieball has long been a fan of Justin Vernon. Check out our previous posts on Bon Iver’s Bloodbank EP, as well as two of his side projects, Volcano Choir and Gayngs.}
