Stroked: A Tribute to Is This It

posted by Loren on July 29, 2011

For the 10-year anniversary of the release of The Strokes’ incredible debut Is This It, the talented endeavors of Stereogum have yet again produced something amazing. Asking around from their favorite and most creative artists, this intelligent community has come together to produce a collection of covers that are not simply irresistible but more so honorable mimics of such an incredible album. The Strokes for more than a decade now have created a sound so distinguished and upbeat it has taken residence among so many music lovers. It is not often, in fact seldom, you come across a musical fanatic who is not head over heels in love with the band from NYC. Therefore it is that much more extraordinary to listen to Stroked: A Tribute to Is This It and not appreciate the variation in beat that stays connected to the album’s originals while being so disjointed at the same time.

The Morning Benders are the perfect example. Even within their own confinements this band on the track “Last Night” reach beyond limitations of their own sound producing a great synth pop jam of such an upbeat garage rock sound. Peter Bjorn and John created the perfect dusk at dawn beat uplifting the slower “Is This It” title track into a catchy and appealing sound. Check out the whole album over at Stereogum with covers from Austra, Owen Pallet, Real Estate, and Wise Blood to name a few. You can download the entire set for free at the Stereogum site.
