Ian Axel

posted by Loren on August 3, 2011

Ian Axel makes you feel like coffee is the drink of choice; like his name should be in the iTouch you’re about to buy. It’s no coincidence Axel’s presence appears to be funneled straight from the Apple Store, because it kind of is. The vocalist, pianist, and frequent ukulele player jumpstarted his musical talents with gigs at Apple Stores first as an employee, slowly making his way onto the playlist and scoring shows at a span of other stores. But before those performances, the journeyman made his way via Fair Lawn, New Jersey and then on to New York University where he manifested his incredible voice and musical inclinations.

Axel at times sounds like the guy who played the guitar (or in his case the ukulele) while you sat and ate lunch in high school. But the difference lies in his sound being more refined and when infected with hints of reverb has a unique appeal. His voice is similar to vocals reminiscent of now extinct indie pop group The Format, which resembles post-emo infused with folk and alternative rock. On the track “Say Something,” Axel portrays the unavoidable position of unrequited love, a somber ballad spoken simply about the tragedy of a relationship that lacks communication. Axel is truthfully raw and surprisingly distinguished, apart from any YouTube sensation with a ukulele. His other tracks (check out “Pacific Sun” below) do at times sound similar but with progress and exploration, Axel could be showcasing more than just the local Apple Store. His album, This Is The New Year, was released earlier this year.
