Having studied psychology at one time, I love the title of Brice Woodall’s latest, Id Escaped, released this past July. Currently Chicago-based, but hailing from North Virginia, Woodall, in collaboration with Trevor Bittinger and Mark Lewis, has crafted an EP that is a melodic amalgamation of the heart of both of these places. It’s rockin’, it’s groovy, it’s delicate, it’s driven, it’s polite, it’s in your face; it’s all of these things, all of the time. Like the Id, the album feels instinctual, impulse-driven, yet at times reigned back in by other forces.
Id Escaped is a top release for me from the first half of this year. To hear why, listen to “Cut Off the Legs” below, the rockiest track on the album. The opening guitar, which drills still further, is, quite simply put, bad-ass. The drumwork is punctuated and spacious, creating a turbulent sea of rhythms pushing the song where it needs to be at any given time. Contrast this with the mellower, synth-heavy “Someone Is Sleeping,” which eerily builds in intensity, synth winding, tempo slinking stealthily by, drums shouting ominous phrases. It’s like walking through an apocalyptic wasteland, with a glimmer of hope in the distance. Don’t stop here; be sure to download the entire album or, for any record-lovers, add the 7″ vinyl to your collection.
