Frightened Rabbit

posted by Alex on August 24, 2011

Serenade me with your beautiful Scottish accent, Scott Hutchinson.  I don’t care what you say, I will still love you.  After purchasing last year’s The Winter of Mixed Drinks, I quickly fell into a Conrad Birdie-like crush for Hutchinson.  The Scotland native band, Frightened Rabbit, has been charming audiences since 2004.  They have released a total of three studio albums, but from what I suspect, they are working on a new one as we speak.

Being a total loser with no life, I sat for hours searching the web for new music.  I stumbled upon a beautiful song by the name of “Fuck This Place.” Such a lovely title.  Not only was it a Frightened Rabbit song that I had never heard, but it featured Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura. Scottish buddies!!  I dug deeper and found another catchy catchy tune called “Scottish Winds” (they sure love their homeland).  Sadly, I could not find any information on a full-fledged upcoming album.

Frightened Rabbit is currently touring with Death Cab for Cutie through the end of August, and these songs are featured on the Tour-only three track EP. I’m a strange breed of human: I have never been a fan of Death Cab. But the two bands combined must make an excellent show.  So, go and purchase the magic!!

Pearl and the Beard

posted by Alex on August 11, 2011

What more do I need to say? The below track “Sweetness” has a cello in it.  But wait, it gets even better.  The song is also a duet!  Can’t get any better than that.

I love the unique instrumentation and catchy vocals of the eccentric trio, Pearl and The Beard.  Jocelyn Mackenzie, Emily Hope Price, and Jeremy Styles met in New York City and the rest is history.  Pearl and The Beard has a wide range of instruments, ranging from simple guitar to a glockenspiel.  Their most recent album, Killing The Darlings, was released earlier this year; I love every chord, every rhythm, and every minute of it.

“Sweetness” is the perfect love song.  It isn’t dark and depressing, yet it still possesses a certain charm that could win over anyone.  It’s fast and upbeat, but closes with Styles slowly and beautifully repeating the word “sweetness” over and over.  For all you romantics out there, “Sweetness” deserves a spot on your mix tape.

Sadly, Pearl and The Beard will not be visiting my small hometown of Los Angeles.  If you are on the east coast, you’re lucky, since they will be making many stops there throughout August and September.

Bon Iver

posted by Alex on July 7, 2011

It has been a grueling, even painful waiting process for the new Bon Iver album.  2008’s For Emma, Forever Ago goes down as one of my all time favorite records.  Justin Vernon is a stunning vocalist and every lyric and melody on the album is simply beautiful.  The highly anticipated Bon Iver, Bon Iver was finally released on June 20, 2011.   There are some major differences between the two albums.

For Emma was famously recorded in complete hibernation.  If you didn’t already know, Vernon recorded the entire album by himself in a secluded cabin in Wisconsin.  Every instrument and vocal included in the album is completely Justin Vernon.  While also recorded in Wisconsin, Bon Iver is very different.  The album itself was made in a recording studio that Vernon and his brother created, a studio special to Vernon and close to his childhood home.  However, the most significant difference in this album is the addition of sounds, including saxophone and pedal-steel, contributing to his new, unique sound.  In certain songs, Bon Iver is far from the acoustic and raw first album, his sound almost resembling something taken from the 90s.

“Towers” exemplifies Vernon’s new style, yet still maintains the poetic and lyrical musicianship of the brilliant songwriter.  His tour in the US continues throughout the summer and makes its way to Europe in the Fall. Don’t miss him!  The chance to see the iconic Bon Iver would be life changing.

{Editor’s Note: Indieball has long been a fan of Justin Vernon. Check out our previous posts on Bon Iver’s Bloodbank EP, as well as two of his side projects, Volcano Choir and Gayngs.}

Freelance Whales

posted by Alex on June 4, 2011

There is still no word about the next Freelance Whales album. Tear. The New York native band released their beloved Weathervanes in 2010 and has been keeping fans waiting WAY too long for another unorthodox, musically brilliant record. Because I have no life, I spent a good two hours searching the Internet for new music the other day. To my joyous surprise, I came across gold: a new Freelance Whales song! The band teamed up with their touring mate, Foals, to release a split, double-A-side 7-inch vinyl single. The record was released on April 12th, 2011.

After listening, I realized that “Girl U Want” is a cover of a slightly annoying Devo song. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge Devo fan; I love their music and I love their hats. The original is high energy, repetitive, and extremely Mark Mothersbaughy. Freelance Whales made the song their own and to even a Devo fan, the song is very unrecognizable. They utilized a synthesizer and banjo to transform the song into a melodic, slow, and lyrical love song.

Check out our previous Freelance Whales post here, which includes two tracks from Weathervanes. Support their Benefit for Japan remix EP at their official site link below. Catch them at B.O.M.B. Fest in Connecticut from May 28th-29th or at the anticipated Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee from June 9th- 12th. Can the band ever create an album to top Weathervanes? The question still remains unanswered.
