Just back from a few Band of Horses shows, I happen to get lucky enough to catch the opening act, Jenny and Johnny. My first thought: “If I had a band, it would sound exactly like this.” A perfect combination of acoustic and electric guitar, in flawless harmony. How could that duo possibly go wrong? I’m not talking about the guitars, I’m talking about Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice. These two talented musicians have finally joined forces and created a sound that suits them completely. Not too hard…not too soft. It’s just perfect music to my ears. You might recognize Jenny Lewis’ name as she’s been with Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins. Combine Jenny’s voice with Jonathan’s lyrics and you have music that matters; One asks the questions, the other answers.
The two tracks below were the first two songs from their live set and my personal favorites. After the show, I immediately bought their latest CD, “I’m having Fun Now.” I hope you do the same.

When I hear a band these days, it has to grab me somehow and not let go. And it has to be quick – I’m the type that decides in the first few seconds of a song whether I’ll like it or not and whether to listen to the rest of the album. With The Morning Benders, it was Christopher Chu’s vocals that pulled me in. Once again…I’m addicted to reverb. Use it and you have my full attention. Not only does this band have a great vibe, they have a true rock’n'roll sound. The sound that makes you remember why you love music so much in the first place. There’s music that makes you want to jump up and down. There’s music you want to just “listen” to and then there’s music you want to get lost in and just hear more and more of. These tunes I picked to share are just an example of The Morning Benders’ talent. You can catch them on tour now in the US and then they’re off to Australia in December. Do check them out if they swing through your town. I know I will on November 18th.

I’ve been away for too long I know. Well now I’m back from what I think is too long of a music hiatus. What better way is there to spread the love by sharing music that you love. Take a listen to “Free Energy”. This indie rock band started jamming together in Red Wing Minnesota. After moving to Philadelphia they picked up their last two members of the band and thus became the music that you hear today. Not to be mistaken for a “rock” band these guys still manage to put out that Indie edge. You might be able to compare them to some 70′s rock back in the day but what’s wrong with that? Absolutely nothing. For me…I hear music similar to the band Jet’s sound. Maybe a little “Fountain’s of Wayne”? You know I like to give you a little hint of what the band sounds like to entice you to listen. Anyway…check out my favorite tunes and decide for yourself.

One of the great things about going to sxsw is catching a really cool band at a small venue. You get to get up close and personal and you can really listen and appreciate the music. Uninhabitable Mansions was formed in Brooklyn with one or two members of other talented bands such as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Au Revoir Simone. How can you go wrong when the project involves nothing but talent from other great acts? The only thing I regret is that I came all the way to Austin to hear these musicians from my home town. The best way I can describe the band is “not too much and not too little”. Uninhabitable Mansions has the perfect blend of guitar and vocals that makes it easy to relish in their music. The band really gives off the vibe that they love what they do and they like seeing the audience enjoying the music.

Do you write all links to bands wrong on purpose or what? It’s annoying, but the blog is excellent. Just work on that.
