Mathieu Santos

posted by Patrick on September 18, 2011

Mathieu Santos of Ra Ra Riot has just released his first solo album, the oddly named Massachusetts 2010, and it’s honestly a mixed bag. There are some excellent nuggets of melodic electro pop, along with a song or two that might have been best left in the studio. But when Santos hits his mark, he really nails it, and both of the tracks below are simply addictive (and addictively simple). “I Can Hear the Trains Coming” features Santos’ falsetto voice against a sing-song harmony that evokes hazy summer days and sweetly addled memories. “Northern Melody” sounds completely different and is less catchy but more interesting. If Massachusetts 2010 is an experiment in musical styles and textures, these tracks represent opposite ends of Santos’ spectrum, and perfection lies somewhere in between. Santos should get there, eventually; he’s too talented not to.

Young Man

posted by Loren on June 11, 2011

It’s reassuring sometimes to feel a part of a crowd. Anonymity keeps attention astray. But when I hit college it wasn’t necessarily the case, as I couldn’t fade into the masses and at times felt so isolated within an audience that the disconnection was unbearable. What I came to realize was that the crowd weren’t people, but my responsibility of becoming an adult. You lose yourself in the process. Then I came upon Chicago’s Colin Caulfield and his melodious instrumentals and realized that the same issues aren’t just my own.

He goes by the moniker Young Man and it suits his intentions so well. Young Man sings to the harmonies of a literal young man, fading among the bright guitars and classic beats of the kicks and snares. His debut EP Boy, released last year, speaks of the troubles that lie between becoming an adult and disconnecting yourself from a drifting youth. Caulfied was an English/French major in college and his lyrics pay the price for such an education, profound and intimate as they are. I love the track “Just A Growin’,” which portrays the likes and wants of an adult, which contradict the insatiable appetites of a child and the shifting interests. The rhythm is so simple but infectious as life can be at times. The method to Young Man’s madness is just that: beauty in the simplicity. Check out the entire EP now, as well as the demo “Fate,” also included below.

Cults

posted by Patrick on October 11, 2010

‘Go Outside’ starts with a snippet from Jim Jones, of Jonestown fame, then shifts into a parallel universe of dreamy, lilting pop. The pairing might seem odd, but Cults makes music that befits its name: hypnotic, absorbing songs that work their way into your subconscious and compel you to follow along. I have no idea what Cults is singing about or trying to say, but I can’t stop listening. Hide the Kool-Aid and plug in.

The band’s first three songs are available free on Band Camp

The Sunray Estate

posted by Tina on June 30, 2009

Let me introduce you to a brand new indie pop band. Music fans, meet…The Sunray Estate. I don’t usually go for the electronics and computer creations of music these days but this band sounds absolutely amazing to me. There are layers upon layers of different vibes to their music and yet you’ll never get lost. I promise you, you’ll be able to keep up with every note and every chord. It’s just that good. The Sunray Estate is mostly made up of Jez Thomas these days but he’s been known to have several others come and go. I think that’s one of the things I like about this band. The music sticks to this eclectic sound. But the vocals vary with a different person in a few songs. Where the hell did this band come out of? Like where are they from? Cockermouth, Cumbria. Which is a burrough in England. If you don’t believe me, look it up. I did. The Sunray Estate is actually an area of land that was built in England in the early 1920′s. Why they chose the name…I don’t exactly know but I’m sure it has some significance to the band to the person who created this catchy music.
