Of Oceans

posted by Jessica on January 24, 2011

The facts about Of Oceans are as hazy as their wistful beats.  This much is known: Of Oceans originates from Detroit and is associated with one Peter Bosch.  A two-song EP was released last month, available as a $1 download.

You start by thinking Of Oceans is great chill out music, made for the background.  It’s simple and synthy with formulaic rhythm.  Then, “In Love, Not Limbo” beckons “wait” and you are drawn into the ethereal electric ditty.  Despite its moody title, “My Love For You Will Surely Be The Death Of Me” has a carefree playful feel.   There’s an unexpected poignancy to these tunes that invokes reflection and guides you into a head-bobbing daydream.

UNKLE

posted by Tina on August 29, 2010

It’s no secret I’m drawn to music that has an 80′s vibe and influence to it. UNKLE is no exception to that fact. Take two parts electronica, one part alternative, and a dash of Indie pop and you have the sound that James Lavelle is responsible for. UNKLE. No doubt you can tell this multi talented DJ grew up in London at the peak of music of the 90′s. Maybe that’s why I like it so much. Starting way back then and still going strong including a new track on the latest Twilight movie “Eclipse” titled “With you in my Head”. And for the bonus that tune features The Black Angels. So there you have it. Two bands that could not possibly be more different, create a synergistic relationship and a sound that can catch everyone’s attention in the crowd. As always, I’ve given you an old one and a new one to listen to.

Passion Pit

posted by Emily on May 11, 2009

Dude. Munchkinland Dance Party. Grab your glowstick and join the fun. You will feel very, very tall–elevated by the Chunk of Change EP’s vivid tunes that were originally created for the erstwhile gf of Michael Angelakos, the mad genius behind Passion Pit. Both Sleepyhead and Better Things are from their shmancy label’s reissue of this labor of love. Want more? Me too. Lucky for us, the new album, ‘Manners,’ is set to drop May 19. Check it out. Or catch Passion Pit on tour all summer and fall, including stops at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and even Indieball’s hometown of D.C. These crazy kids from Cambridge, Mass are going places; they’ll be selling out shows in The Emerald City in no time. I’d brave crossing poppy fields to get there.

Whoever is doing booking for Passion Pit is making their salary like whoa. They are playing everywhere! But it should be that way if you’re a young band, I’m glad that I live in a big enough city that they’ve rolled through a couple times in the past year.

But they are also performing on the new Josh Schwartz web- series Rockville CA (www.rockvilleca.com), so you can only expect them to get a lot bigger.

Fredrik

posted by Patrick on April 13, 2009

Fredrik is from Sweden, the land of all things endearing and odd. Or endearingly odd, whichever. Fredrik manages to be both, with electronic-infused folk (an interesting combination in its own right) that somehow evolves into a foot-stomping drumfest on “Na Na Ni.” Sounds awful, right? I hear you, skeptical masses. But somehow—and this must be where the ‘endearing’ bit comes in—it all works. Terrifically and ecstatically, actually.

Open your ears people, and let Fredrik in. They’ll bang around in there but leave you none the worse for wear.
